Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

Britain leads The Way

As the first financial support scheme for renewable heat of its kind in the world, The Renewable Heat Incentive policy will revolutionise the way heat is generated and used.

How does it work?

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government initiative to encourage more people to use renewable energy systems to heat hot water. The scheme was announced in March 2011 and incentivised commercial users with quarterly payments to those with renewable heat installations – including solar thermal.
Now, the domestic customer can get a slice of the cake as well.

What’s it worth?

A fair question to which there is no simple answer because the government holds the purse strings and budgets are a moveable feast. All you need to know right now is that the pot is worth £25 million. As with all government funded schemes, the rule of thumb which applies is that the sooner you act, the more money you will be likely to get. Before you can get a firm figure you have to assess the eligibility of your property. This is where we can help you.

What sort of questions should I expect?

  • Do you live in the property where the system is being installed?
  • Is your loft insulated to a minimum of 250mm
  • Have cavity walls been insulated? (where applicable)
  • Have you obtained a range of quotes for your installation, and chosen the one that best suits your needs?
  • Have you’ve obtained all necessary permissions for the installation – including planning permission (where applicable) and consents from any joint owners of the property
  • Is the property where the new renewable heating system is being installed a permanent residential building and is it occupied for the majority of the year?

It’s more straightforward than it sounds

Basically, the government want homeowners to use more renewables and they have money available to encourage us to do it. As MCS accredited installers, we can show you how to get your fair share of the available money.
