St Luke's & Christchurch

Project summary

With improving efficiency a key objective for this large church and church hall complex in central London, we carried out a detailed energy assessment.

With extensive crypt offices requiring artificial lighting during all working hours and being predominately lit by 500W tungsten halogen lamps, it was clear that upgrading to low energy lighting would produce significant annual running and maintenance cost savings.

Our new lighting scheme features suspended T5 fluorescents with up-lighting to the vaulted ceilings and LED bulkheads to corridors and common parts. For the external perimeter walkways, wall mounted low level LED security fittings were used together with 50W LED floods all of which are controlled by PIR’s to further improve efficiency.

The result delivers a 40,000kWh saving per annum.

As a busy church, Christchurch serves not only its local parish but also the needs of its attached Primary School.

As the focal point of the church, lighting to the large altar area required updating to achieve increased brightness, flexibility and lower running costs.

Due to the size of volumetric area and projection distances involved, to satisfy the brief and provide the levels of light required, a controllable theatre lighting design solution was called for.

Our LED solution features the built in ability to dim and achieve variable colour temperatures. This flexibility ensures that all types of service can be lit properly whatever the availability of natural light. eg General day and Evensong services, Weddings, Christenings, Carol Services and School performances etc.

The design focuses on achieving not only the desired warmth and uniformity but also the ability to highlight and focus on specific areas.

The controller is simple to operate and is pre-programmed with the required number of lighting scenes.

In addition, being all LED the system has minimal running and maintenance costs with lamp life up to 50,000hrs.

The Church Hall serves as a focal point for the local community providing many important services including a Nursery School, Parish and Support Group Meetings, Young People’s Clubs and a Polling Station.

With a high ceiling in the main hall and old inefficient fittings throughout the building, the running and maintenance costs for the lighting were problematic and expensive.

All the lighting was upgraded to LED enabling the Church Hall to benefit from improved brightness and reliability, instant on / off and a 35,000hr + lamp life.

Annual running costs were reduced by 60% with negligible on-going maintenance.
